Director of Accounting - Reporting to CFO - $130-165k - depending on experience - Pasadena

Our client is a dynamic non-profit with a strong purpose focused on medical research. The organization has been around for more than 40 years, has a great culture and an exceptional executive team.
The Director of Accounting position is a new position and was created to assist the Chief Financial Officer with all things accounting. This is a high profile position and will work directly with the CEO along with the Board.

The Director of Accounting is a responsible and detail-oriented individual, working under the direction of the Director of Accounting and assists with the preparation of financial statements, budget reports, and internal control systems. The Director of Accounting's duties also include managing payroll, accounts payable/receivable, reconciling accounts, assisting with financial audits, and participating in the development (and subsequent execution) of budgets and business plans. The Director of Accounting Reports directly to the CFO.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

--- Prepares financial statements to summarize and forecast the organization's financial status.

--- Produces and manages balance sheets and analyze future earnings and expenses.

--- Assists with management of accounting, auditing, and budgeting within the organization.

--- Assists with preparations for audits.

--- Works to reconcile accounting inaccuracies or imbalances.

--- Ensures compliance with and prepare reports according to applicable government regulations.

--- Uses accounting software to maintain records and prepare reports.

--- Delegates accounting tasks to junior accounting staff.

--- Coordinates with and prepares reports for the Chief Financial Officer and upper management.

--- Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related tasks as needed.

--- Assists in the annual and multi-year operating and capital budget process including forecasting and cash planning.

--- Provides management with information vital to the decision-making process.

--- Ensures Retirement and Health & Welfare benefit plans are administrated in accordance with statutory requirements and plan documents, including assisting administrating of 403b and 457 retirement plans.

--- Demonstrates knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards specific to the Not-for-Profit sector.

--- The Director of Accounting also performs a wide range of job duties as assigned and requested.

Education and Experience

--- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA or MBA preferred.

--- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with a minimum of 3 years as Director of Accounting. Must have Non-Profit Experience.

--- Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP

--- Working knowledge of financial preparation, not-for-profit reporting, budget preparation and analysis, cost accounting, fund accounting, audit procedures, and tax compliance.

--- Advanced working knowledge of fund accounting software.

--- Grants administration experience and knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to grants and contracts administration is required

--- Significant experience with cost allocation methodologies.

--- Familiarity with US Government negotiated indirect rates and methodologies preferred.

--- Outstanding computer skills. Must be proficient with MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Zoom.

--- Prior experience training and retaining skilled accounting staff.

--- Excellent verbal and written communication skills across all levels of an organization.

--- Strong leadership skills with a dedication to driving and achieving results.

--- Knowledge of employee relationship building and performance management techniques.

--- Ability to be a team player; support and assist team members.

--- Good judgment and decision-making capability.

--- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues, building respect, consensus, and trust across reporting lines.
