ROLE OVERVIEW

KARL STORZ is currently seeking a Legal Operations Manager to join the Global Legal & Compliance Department. This position is based in El Segundo, CA and will report to the Senior Legal Counsel for KARL STORZ North America.

The primary responsibility of this position is to promote and operationalize the Legal Department's mission and value proposition through strategic planning that is in alignment with the priorities of the business. This role has been newly created to support a relatively new Legal Department that has grown quickly in the past year. We are looking for a talented and motivated individual who can apply strategic thinking and work closely with the attorneys in the Legal Department to drive department efficiencies and productivity, implement automated processes that optimize the delivery of legal services, streamline knowledge management capabilities, and develop change management strategy. The ideal candidate will be a problem solver and detailed project manager who sees the big picture and builds strong relationships with business partners and stakeholders within the company at all levels and in all operational groups.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of legal operations; including providing strategic direction in developing programs and processes for tracking progress;
  • Develop and implement a technology roadmap and manage legal technology initiatives to streamline or optimize new and/or existing processes, including those related to matter management, contract management, e-billing, and/or knowledge management;
  • Support department planning by driving the development of periodic business metrics and providing operational analysis through reports and analytics dashboards;
  • Manage training on new systems and processes as needed, for the Legal Department as well as business partners;
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of the overall strategy of the Legal Department, including annual goals, objectives, and key results;
  • Assist legal team members regarding the development and management of project plans, including the assignment and tracking of tasks and overall goals;
  • Manage legal vendors (outside counsel and vendors) to optimize efficiency and reduce spend, including the development of billing guidelines and other vendor cost reduction strategies;
  • Streamline knowledge management capabilities, including by developing and supporting programs that promote collaboration and knowledge sharing across the legal team and with business partners as applicable;
  • Manage communications and change management efforts for the Legal Department;
  • Develop training resources and tools for the business to understand foundational legal issues;
  • Other duties as assigned.
    REQUIREMENTS

    Our successful candidate will have excellent oral and written English language business communication skills; be extremely organized; be team oriented and collaborative; as well as be a proactive and resourceful individual.

    Additional requirements include, but are not limited to:
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school;
    • Minimum of 5 - 10 years of relevant experience in legal operations, finance or IT within a law firm or legal department, preferably building legal operation programs;
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 suite of applications including Sharepoint and PowerBI;
    • Experience with matter management and contract lifecycle management solutions;
    • Experience with legal spend management and analytics;
      • Ability to do 5-10% overnight domestic and international travel;
        • Strong presentation and written and verbal communication skills;
          • Ability to work with outside counsel, interact with senior management, and collaborate with colleagues at all levels and across organizational and geographic boundaries;
            • Ability to maintain confidentiality;

              Preferred but not required:
              • 3+years relevant experience in a medical technology or high tech industry;
              • Experience with LawVu, LegalTracker, CounselLink or other ELM Solutions;
              • Experience with Litigation and eDiscovery Processes;
              • Experience with HIPAA and other privacy laws;
              • Experience with change management;
              • Excellent written and spoken German language business communication skills.
